FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Winery, Nello Olivo, Wins Two Platinum Medals

CAMERON PARK, CA, March 25, 2010: In his first official wine competition entry, boutique winemaker Nello Olivo has garnered two Platinum medals from the 2010 Monterey International Wine Competition. His Platinum winners are: Barbera '06 and Toscanello '07. In the Monterey competition, wines nominated for Best of Show are awarded the Platinum medal---a rare high accomplishment for a small label's first ever competitive bid.

Nello Olivo and his Rancho Olivo Vineyards began producing wine in 2005, using the self-named Nello Olivo label, but he held back until now from competing and from assertive distribution in order to solidify the company and test his product locally. Olivo's ultra-boutique wines (he produces only about 100 cases of each), known only by a few appreciative fans, now step forward into the light of an international competition win. And Olivo is understandably thrilled.

"Certainly we had hopes of a medal," Olivo says, "but winning two Platinums really excites us. Not because we think we deserve the praise, but because it indicates strongly to us that we're on the right track." Knowing you're on the right track means a lot in any new endeavor, but especially in wine production, where years of painstaking labor are required before ever seeing your first bottle of wine. More so, your first medal.

"Medals are important," says Olivo, "because they indicate to wine lovers when a certain wine may be worth their investment. But they also encourage a wine producer like me as a signal that all the risk and the years of committed effort is getting you somewhere closer to your goals."

Olivo's goal since early in life was to produce wine like his grandfather did in Italy from home-grown grapes. In the 90s he started making wine in his garage. When he outgrew that in 2000, he and wife, Danica, bought a nearby 21 acres, started Rancho Olivo Vineyards, and assembled their team. Winemaker Lance Campbell first came aboard and deserves credit for the winning Barbera. Later, Campbell relocated, and Marco Cappelli stepped in. He shares credit for the winning Toscanello.

It's taken Nello Olivo ten years to reach this point of recognition from authoritative peers that his dedicated passion and grass roots know-how are achieving something worthy of notice. But as important as winning medals is for business, to Olivo what's also important---in a self-fulfilling way---is the official corroboration these medals bring that his wines are in fact truly good. Olivo says, "Hey, the judges are just people who happen to be experts about good wine." Then he adds with a grin, "And they happen to like mine!"

That may be as fulfilling to Nello Olivo personally as Platinum itself.
